Jyske Aas

One of Europe's northernmost ridges

Jyske Aas is one of Europe’s northernmost ridges. Start your visit in the southern part around the forest of Dronninglund Storskov, where the spiral-shaped information centre, Porten, is located. From here, you can experience the hilly and contrasting natural landscape of Jyske Aas.

Jyske Aas consists of 39 hilltops and extends over 38 km from Dronninglund in the south to Østervrå in the north-west. The hilltop Knøsen is located in the woodland Dronninglund Storskov and, at 136 metres above sea level, is North Jutland’s highest point. Jyske Aas was formed by glaciers during the last ice age. When the glaciers melted, they left behind the material carried by the ice. The term ‘aas’ refers to the oblong ridges of large and small stones, which were formed by the meltwater deposits from the glaciers.

Cycling and walking routes run across Jyske Aas. You can learn more about the nature, geology and cultural history of this location at Porten. Here, there is also a car park, toilet and picnic area.
