Nørreskov

One of Denmark's longest coastal forests full of cultural monuments

Nørreskov is known for its impressive beech trees and, stretching across 9 km, it is one of Denmark’s longest coastal forests. The forest trees measure up to a height of 30 metres and are amongst Denmark’s tallest. You can explore the forest’s undulating terrain and beautiful streams, or go for a walk along the beach in the shade of the large trees. From the beach, you can enjoy the views of Lillebælt (the Little Belt).

In the middle of the forest is Fjordmosen, which is a particularly impressive sight in the summer months, when flowers appear in the surrounding meadows. There is a population of green tree frogs in Fjordmosen and in the spring you can hear their croaking chorus. If you’re lucky, you can also see fallow deer that live in the forest, or bats that inhabit the forest’s hollow trees.

Nørreskov contains many archaeological remains. You can find remains of old dolmens in several places in the forest, and you can also walk on the old stone bridge over the stream Grønnebækken. Helvedgård Voldsted is also worth a visit. Here you can discover a moat that is the last remnant of the medieval manor house.

Each season offers different activities in Nørreskov: In the spring, you can pick anemones that cover the forest floor; in the summer, you can swim at the beach; and in the autumn forage for edible mushrooms. You can drive through Nørreskov via Nørskovvej, and there are also several passable roads down to the coast. For those who like to walk, there’s Alsstien (the Als Path), which runs along the coast, and two shorter walking routes – Strandruten (the Beach Route) and Kulturruten (the Cultural Route) – both of which are around 2 km long.
