Thy National Park

Denmark's first national park

Thy National Park is the first national park in Denmark and contains fantastic experiences for both young and old. The national park stretches from Agger Tange in the south to Hanstholm in the north. The area is 244 km2 and offers dune plantations, the beautiful coastline, good local produce and various sights, such as Lodbjerg lighthouse, Stenbjerg Landingsplads and much more.

There are a few restricted areas, but most of the park is open to visitors. There are plenty of opportunities for hiking in the beautiful nature, as well as the opportunity for accommodation at the various shelter and tent sites in the area.

In the national park's logo you can see nature, water and two cranes. The crane has been selected for the park's logo, as the largest population of cranes breeds right here and is therefore a popular sight in the area. It is typically in March and April where visitors can catch a glimpse of the crane in the beautiful countryside. In addition to the crane, it is possible to see for example crowned deer, sea eagles and the harbor seal in and around the national park.

Lodbjerg Lighthouse

Lodbjerg lighthouse is definitely worth a visit. The beautiful lighthouse was built way back in 1884 and was restored in 2019. It is 35 meters high and visitors can, for the meager price of DKK 30, go for a walk up to the lighthouse, where there are both views of the surrounding nature and west coast.

It is possible to drive all the way up to the lighthouse and here are both parking facilities, coffee room, toilet facilities, a shelter space, and a beautiful old chicken house. Many hiking routes start at the same time from here, and there will also be an opportunity to get help and guidance for the various routes.

Other landmarks in NationalPark Thy

Stenbjerg Landingsplats - Fine old tool houses and a rescue station which dates back to 1931. It is today protected and contains an exhibition about the then rescue service.

Klitmøller - Klitmøller is also referred to as 'Cold Hawaii' due to the good current and wind conditions which make the place ideal for surfing. In addition to the exciting surfing culture, the area also offers beautiful plantations and dunes as well as various routes for the hikers.

Bunkermuseum Hanstholm - The west coast is characterized by the German occupation in World War II. Bunker Museum Hanstholm provides an insight into the occupation and the lives of the soldiers and inhabitants during the war.

Iceberg - Iceberg is the highest point in Hanstholm Wildlife Reserve. The point is 56 meters above sea level and is therefore a special sight for visitors. The area around the iceberg is one of the areas where visitors do not have unlimited access, as it is a special breeding ground for some specific bird species. The wildlife is therefore alive and well in this reserve and it is worth an experience.
