Kongenshus Hede

Unique heath area full of cultural history

Kongenshus Hede is one of Denmark’s largest continuous heath areas. If you stand in the middle of the open landscape, you can see the heath stretching out as far as the eye can see, with clear views on all sides. You can learn about the cultural history of the area in Kongenshus Mindepark.

The heath is covered in typical, low-lying heath plants, such as heather, crowberry and cowberry. When the heather blooms in August, the heath offers a wonderful natural sensory experience, combining purple nuances with aromatic late summer scents. In 1953, Kongenshus Hede was made a protected area to ensure the heath’s continued existence. At the same time, a memorial park was established, containing 300 monuments to the farmers who had made a special contribution to the cultivation of the heath. Today, the heath landscape is secured by regular intervention, which ensures that the open landscape does not turn into woodland.

You can experience Kongenshus Hede from the observation tower or by walking over its extensive areas. At Kongenshus Kro and Hotel there’s a family-friendly nature centre, where you can learn more about the natural and cultural history of the heath. There are also parking places here.
