Maribosøerne

Beautiful lakes with lots of little islands

Maribosøerne (the Maribo Lakes) is Denmark’s largest freshwater system. If you take a walk around the area with your children, ask them to count the many small islands – these lakes contain the most in all of Denmark. You can also enjoy the unique birdlife, including white-tailed eagles and ospreys.

The Maribo Lakes consist of Søndersø, Røgbølle Sø, Hejrede Sø, Nørresø and the surrounding basin. Søndersø is the largest of the lakes, and with its 13 islands, 6 small islets and 3 floating islands are Denmark’s most island-rich lake. The combination of islands and lakes provides favorable conditions for the area’s birdlife. White-tailed eagles can be seen all the year round while Ospreys are spotted during the summer months. The white-tailed eagle returned to Denmark as a breeding bird at the Maribo Lakes in 1995, after an absence of 100 years. The lakes are surrounded by fields, meadows, fjords, and woods. In early spring, blue, white and yellow anemones emerge from the forest floor. Several magnificent manor houses are located in between the lakes.

You can experience the Maribo Lakes on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or in a small boat. You can visit one of Denmark’s oldest preserved baroque gardens at the manor of Søholt. The garden was established in the 1690s and contains fascinating geometric patterns involving circles, squares and straight lines.
