Alrø

Unspoiled nature in Horsens Fjord

The small island of Alrø is located in Horsens Fjord and offers visitors unspoiled nature, aquatic activities and Stone Age stories. The island is very flat and open, so there are fine views over the cultivated fields all the way down to the coast.

Alongside the dam to Alrø, there are excellent opportunities all year round to spot the rich birdlife. Just after reaching the island, to the south, you can see Pollerne, which resemble small deserted islands. Pollerne is overgrown sandbanks and an important breeding area for birds. You may also see porpoises and seals in the waters around Alrø during the summer months. With a little luck and keen eyes, at the southern end of the island, you can also find along the beach shore old Stone Age tools of the island’s earliest inhabitants.

At the island’s highest point, 14 metres above sea level, is Alrø Church, which offers pleasant views over the region. The Danish author Morten Korch has lived on the island, and both Alrøs Bakkegård and Møllegård are mentioned in his stories.

If you like fishing, the northern side of the island offers ideal opportunities. Or you can keep the fish company in the water, in a kayak or boat. If you prefer wind and kitesurfing, head to the south side of the island, it’s the perfect spot for these activities. You can reach Alrø by car along the island’s long dam, or take the ferry from Snaptun in the summer.
