Viking Museum Ladby

Experience the Viking king's grave

Are you interested in the Viking Age and want to get closer to real Viking history? Then the Viking Museum Ladby is just the thing for you. Here, the focus is on the Viking Age in Northeast Funen, but especially on the King of Ladby, who probably had great importance for the local area.

Ladbykongen's ship grave

The Viking Museum Ladby is special because it contains the only preserved ship grave from the Viking Age in Denmark, the Ladby Ship. At an exhibition you can see the Ladby ship in a rebuilt burial mound, in the place where it was found in 1935. Archaeologists have established that the ship was pulled ashore in 925, and the Ladby king was buried in the ship with his horses, dogs and valuable possessions.

In the Viking Age, it was common for people to be buried with their valuable possessions and animals, because they had to be properly equipped for the journey to the next kingdom. It was no exception for the King of Ladby, and at Viking Museum Ladby's permanent exhibition in the basement, you can see a full-size reproduction of everything he brought with him themselves.

The Ladby Dragon

A reconstruction of the Ladby ship, which in the summer can be found in the fjord below the burial mound, which is a short walk from the museum building itself. It is located on the spot where the original ship was pulled into the country in the 920s. There is no access on the ship itself, but you can still see it from the boat bridge.

If you do not visit the museum in the summer, it is still possible to see the ship. In winter, the ship is towed ashore, where it is placed in a tent. Here, the ship is maintained by volunteers, and there is a free opportunity for you to see it as well.

Reflect on the story

The Viking Museum Ladby is a museum for the entire North-East Funen Viking Country. Through the exhibitions at the museum, you as a visitor are greeted by knowledge archaeologists have found over time, but you are also made to reflect on the knowledge you receive.

As you read through the museum's information, you will also find questions all around that will get your thoughts going. Our knowledge of the Viking Age is full of gaps, and since there is no Viking to ask about what the time was like, we have to fill in some of the gaps ourselves.

Viking fashion

You don't just have to read and think about Vikings, you can also dress up as one. The Viking Museum Ladby has a clothing room where you can find Viking clothing in various sizes for both men, women and children. They are copies based on clothes archaeologists have found from the Viking Age, and you can therefore try on your own body what kind of clothes they wore a thousand years ago since.

  1. Dogs not allowed

Leider durften wir unseren kleinen Hund nicht mitnehmen, daher konnten wir das Museum nicht besichtigen! Sehr schade, da wir mit dem Rad unterwegs waren.
