The sandy oak forest

Oak trees covered in flying sand

The sandy oak forest is located in Kærgård dune plantation, also known as the sandy oaks. It consists of several 100-year-old oak trees, which have been quietly covered with flying sand over time. When you move around the area, it looks like just larger bushes and thickets, but you are actually among the crowns of the 7-8 meter tall oak trees.

In the parking lot, from where several hiking trails are marked, there is no direct sign for the oaks in the sand, but if you stand by the large information board and look over to the opposite side of the road, you will find a smaller sign, here with a little descriptive text about the oaks, see the image below. On the opposite side of the road, the routes start around among the sandy oak trees.

In the car park you will find a map of 2 routes that will take you through the sandy oaks. The red route is 1.9 km long, here you get to see and walk among tree crowns that stick up above the sand. If, on the other hand, you choose the yellow route of 4.4 km, you will also pass by Gråmulebjerg. Gråmulebjerget is a 30 meter high dune, with a completely magnificent view, which can definitely be recommended. If you choose the longer route, shortly after Gråmulebjerget you will pass 2 sets of tables and benches, from which you can enjoy the food you have brought with you.

It is recommended that you set aside 1-3 hours for the trip, depending on which route you choose.

The car park is located on the stretch between Kærgårdvej 9 and 11, 6840 Oksbøl. In the car park there is a table, bench set and fire place.

Yes, you can. However, the last part of both routes is a bit narrow, which is why we do not recommend that you have a wide cart with you, the ground also consists of a lot of root netting, so on small parts of the trip you must be prepared to have to lift the cart over roots and a little unevenly terrain.

Due to shortening of the area, there is a WC at the car park, as well as when you are halfway on the yellow route.
