Spøttrup Castle

A real medieval castle

Spøttrup castle is surrounded by ramparts that lie beautifully in the landscape, next to Spøttrup lake.

Explore a real medieval castle

There are also various events throughout the year. In the Autumn holidays, for example, you can have a spooky experience, with ghosts as the focal point!

Medieval castle

If the view isn't enough, Spøttrup Castle is actually also the closest you'll get to experiencing a real, and well-preserved, medieval castle in Denmark.

Over the years, the castle has managed to keep out enemies, and therefore has never been captured. The ramparts around the castle are a good part of the reason for this.

The castle's exhibitions

You can explore a real castle with moats, as well as a castle tower, knight's hall and everything that goes into creating a real castle. The castle is furnished with furniture from the first half of the 18th century.

In the welcome building, you have the opportunity to experience an exhibition about the history of Spøttrup Castle. There is a particular focus on Bishop Jørgen Friis, who completed the castle in the 1520s. A time of civil war, where the battle for both throne and faith raged.

The medical herb garden

As mentioned, the area around Spøttrup Castle is beautiful, and this also includes the garden, which is inspired by the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.

There are i.a. a medicinal herb garden with over 250 plants to make medicine from. These are plants that in the Middle Ages were believed to have a healing effect.

Events all year round

The castle offers a lot of events throughout the year, including tours of Spøttrup castle, holiday activities, markets, and even revitalization, where it really feels like traveling back to the Middle Ages!

  1. A wonderful time

There have been changes. Pictures of Borgen show the need for facade treatment. I came there a lot in the forties, when we visited Torp (or was it Toft). They lived privately in the south wing. We came to the park east of every time there was a gymnastics demonstration. The lake did not exist. But the stream's water could overflow in the winter and form a small lake on which we skated. After the sale of Spøttrup Gartneri - we moved temporarily (until a new place was ready) to Strømhuset, which was opposite the Castle - out by the water. Another great one. Caught many eels in the stream - and crabs on the beach. Yes, a lovely region - and time.
