History center Dybbøl Banke
History center Dybbøl Banke contains the stories about the war in 1864, which is considered to be one of the biggest defeats in Danish history, nevertheless it is also a war that has great significance for Europe in the following years.
A huge defeat
It was a war that in many ways changed the Danes' self-understanding, and the time when Schleswig-Holstein came under Prussian rule and Denmark's area was one of the smallest it has been. It was equivalent to 40% of Denmark's area that then passed to Prussia.
Only in 1920 is Denmark reunited with a small part of Schleswig, which becomes what we know today as Southern Jutland.
A special experience
Dybbøl banke is an experience where your senses come into play when you move around the area. Cannons being fired, wounded soldiers, and a sense of the chaos that war is, are some of the elements that can be felt when visiting Dybbøl Bank.
The history center is special because its exhibitions put a very clear focus on a war that had a great negative impact on Denmark, and thus a positive impact on Prussia, later known as Germany, which won very superiorly over Denmark.
The national feeling
From a time when national feeling begins to gain a lot of ground, and this is also the very reason why Denmark and Germany fought over Schleswig-Holstein as a whole. Both countries were convinced that their state would not be whole without the duchies.
