Himmelbjerget
Himmelbjerget is one of Denmark's highest points. You will find the mountain near Ry, which lies between Silkeborg and Skanderborg. The mountain is one of the main attractions in Silkeborg. The area is called Søhøjlandet and here you can really enjoy the scenery around the Silkeborg lakes and a nice trip to the top of the mountain.
You can park close to the tower, sail with the wheeled steamer Hjejlen or walk along the paths on the Himmelbjerg route to get there. Sail with the wheel steamer Hjejlen
You can get to Himmelbjerget in several different ways, but if you ask us at OpdagDanmark, one of the most fantastic things about the experience of Himmelbjerget is that you can sail to the foot of Himmelbjerget via the Silkeborg Lakes. We strongly recommend that you take the sailing trip with Hjejlen, one of the world's oldest wheeled steamers, and walk the 15 min (just over 1 km) to the top. It is this trip that makes Himmelbjerget absolutely fantastic.
Hiking routes and maps
You can drive almost all the way up to Himmelbjerget and park right next to it, but if you want the best experience, then you have to park the car in Ry or Silkeborg and get to the mountain in another way.
Our favorite is definitely to take the wheel steamer Hjejlen from one of the berths, as the world's oldest, functioning wheel steamer is a completely unique experience.
But having said that, a hike of the Himmelbjerg route is (almost) just as fantastic. The whole route is 51 km, but you can also just walk parts of it, e.g. from the parking lot in Ry and out to the mountain (approx. 12 km).

A slightly shorter walk to Himmelbjerget
50 km is a bit of a mouthful for even experienced hikers, and should you feel like a slightly shorter walk, we can recommend driving to the parking lot in Ry (see map above) and walk from here. It gives a walk of approx. 12 km in total, back and forth, and after your trip there are good opportunities to eat in Ry.
