Venø

The heart of the Limfjord

Venø is a beautiful little island located in the Limfjord north of Struer. The island is also often referred to as the "Heart of the Limfjord". The island is 7.5 km long and 1.5 km wide, and has an area of about 6.5 km2. It is very easy to visit the fine island, as it is the shortest completed crossing in Denmark with its only 275 meters and travel time of 2.5 minutes. You hop on the ferry at Kleppen and then you arrive at lightning speed on the lovely island. 185 people have settled on the island and live here all year round, and here is plenty of space and time for relaxation and some lovely walks along the coast.

Venø offers some different tourist attractions. One of them is Venø Church, which can be dated all the way back to the 16th century. The church has received a few renovations, but is in almost original condition. It is definitely a must see, as the church stands as Denmark's smallest church as it is not even 10 meters long. It exudes atmosphere and contains a plaque with the names of all the church's priests dating back to 1750.

In addition, you almost have to visit Venø Kro, where you can be allowed to taste Venøbøffen. Back in time, the food was not something to hope for at the dining house on Venø, but then the plaice came on the menu. When the plaice disappeared and the fishermen were giving up, the restaurant came up with the idea of serving a spicy dish of thinly sliced beef that had been seen in Spain, and this dish now goes by the name Venøbøffen. The dish became so popular that to this day it can be bought in selected supermarkets.

On Venø you can also taste VenØsters, which is produced on the island, while you can experience Denmark's second smallest gallery or rent a bike and experience the island's natural gems.

The island is known for being a quiet island which is perfect for the tourist who wants to get completely down in gear and just relax in a beautiful landscape.
