Old Estrup

Denmark's Manor Museum

It has existed since 1930, and works with both the preservation and development of the Gammel Estrup manor. Therefore, it is ideal if you would like to have some more historical knowledge.

The work of the museum

Research and dissemination of the history of the Danish manors is also a central part of the museum's work. The museum deals with all aspects of the manor area, including architecture and landscape, culture and history, agriculture and economy in both a national and international perspective.

The museum itself takes you through several hundred years of manor history in Denmark, starting in the 17th century renaissance, and slowly making your way to the industrialization of Denmark in the 1920s.

All distributed among different exhibitions at the manor museum. You can also visit the servants' humbler quarters and workrooms and see how the forest worker family lived in the past.

The history of the manor

Gammel Estrup is located on the road between Randers and Grenaa. On one side of the road is Mount Helligbjerget, which has functioned as a landmark and viewpoint throughout the ages. However, it is difficult to estimate when Gammel Estrup was built.

Archaeological excavations at the rampart site have found building remains dating back to the 14th century, and from the Middle Ages, several traces have been found that indicate that the manor has been the basis of several disputes, and has also been destroyed in connection with war.

Availability

From the ticket office onwards, stone paving has been installed, which makes it easy for wheelchair users to get down to the manor itself and the Baroque Garden.

The baroque garden has wide garden paths, where the pavement is hard-pressed gravel, but in the castle yard there are topped cobblestones which can be difficult for wheelchairs and walkers to move around on.

Unfortunately, it is not possible for the museum to change access conditions and stairs so that wheelchair users and people with severe walking difficulties can access the exhibitions indoors.

  1. GESCHICHTE HAUTNAH

Wir haben zuerst das grüne Museum beschutz. Die historische Entwicklung der Landschaft und ihrer Bewohner wird eindruckvoll und sichtbar deutlich versmittelt. The devices and objects of use on display give visitors a vivid impression of Danish history. For foreign visitors, an English version of the Hinweise und Beschreibungen an mehr Ausstellungsstücken would be helpful. This also applies to the truly impressive Museum with its many rooms furnished with obviously original memorabilia from the heyday of the Bourgeoisie.
