The Wild Horses

Wild horses at Langeland

If you want to experience wild horses in Denmark, then you must go to Langeland! At Langeland's southern tip you can experience a large herd of wild horses in the area around Gulstav and Dovns Klint. The horses live in a large fenced area with free access for visitors. Here you can enjoy the sight of the wild horses as they graze in the marsh or gallop across the round hills. And in the summer, you can experience the foals taking their first gallop tour of the countryside. Maybe you can find the herd's stallion and driver jumping the flock at approx. 80 horses?

This herd live freely, with the least possible human interference. They came to Langeland in 2006 from a population of horses on the island of Tærø, near Møn. There were 10 horses to begin with, but since then breeding has significantly increased numbers. The horses are actually ponies of the Exmoor pony breed and are related to the original European wild horse. Their coat is thick and brown, and they measure 130 cm in height.

At the entrance to the horses’ enclosure, you can read the rules concerning access to the area, and the birdwatching tower at Gulstav Mose offers fine views over the area. The nearest parking places are at Dovns Klint and Gulstav Mose. At Dovns Klint there are toilets, and you can learn more about the natural and cultural history of the area in the nature centre Dovnsgården.
