The Sand Buried Church

Popular excursion destination in Skagen

The Sanded Church is beautifully located in Skagen's Dune Plantation. If you follow the sandy paths of the dune plantation to the church, you will see how the church tower grows out of the sand as the only visible building element. The church's white walls and red roofs in the natural and lonely landscape represent a majestic and romantic view.

Skagen Dune plantation is planted with the robust mountain lighthouse, which holds well on the sand along with the heather of the area. When the heather blooms in late summer, the landscape gets a beautiful purple color play. The Sanded Church is considered to have been built in the late 1300s, and until 1795 it served as Skagen's parish church. Throughout the years, the congregation struggled to liberate the church from the truth. Eventually the fight against the sand was abandoned and the church closed and pillaged. Only the tower was allowed to stand as a sea mark.

It was not until the establishment of the Skagen Dune Plantation in the 19th century that the trees were planted and partially succeeded in curbing the sand flight.

  1. The Skagen is fine

You write: "The white walls of the church and the red roofs of the natural and lonely landscape represent both a majestic and a romantic view."

Is it a typo, or is the white brick wall a ghost on the spot?

This just because you could can correct the error.
I love Skagen and its surroundings.

    best regards Conni
