Strandgaarden Seaside Hotel

Strandgaarden Seaside Hotel on Læsø is an idyllic hotel that dates back to 1727. The place has been a bathing pension since 1926 when Herman Axelsen first started selling accommodation and a bite to eat for 5 DKK.

Badehotellet is on our map of Denmark's Best Experiences, as in 2018, 2019 and 2020 it ended up in the top 10 in our poll on Denmark's Best Seaside Hotels. Therefore we contacted owner Ole Lind who invited us to visit so that we on our own could discover why they have finished in the top 10 several times: 

As in the old days or modern luxury

One of the first and unique things we notice at Strandgaarden is that you can feel comfortable whether you are into 2018-luxury or a holiday as in the old days. Strandgaarden has both new luxury rooms with private bath and sea views but can also offer more authentic and simple rooms with bath in the hallway. Just like in the old days.

We stayed in the modern rooms from 2006 where we had our own terrace, bath and comfortable beds of the brand Auping:

However, out of curiosity we walked past the old-fashioned rooms where the luxury stops at the sink but where you get the classic seaside hotel idyll:

We will definitely try them next time we come to Læsø.

Hotel on the water's edge

If there is something we must particularly emphasize at Strandgaarden on Læsø, then it is the fantastic location and short distance to the water. You can judge by yourself by this little video:

Here you can also see the different types of accommodation that the hotel offers. The classic rooms can be found in the wing of the main building on the right, while the new and modern rooms can be found in the houses behind the thatched main building - where the distance to the beach is even shorter.

Gourmet restaurant with Læsø on the menu

At Strandgaarden you will find a delicious gourmet restaurant which you often can find in the White Guide and with 5 stars in Nordjyske's food reviews.

During our visit to Strandgaarden we try the restaurant's 5 course menu and we are not disappointed. We are served delicious appetizers to start with as well as champagne and three different kinds of bread.

The first course consists of white asparagus with eggs and rye bread crunch. Afterwards, delicious bacon roe with potato and dill before we are served a delicious dish with Læsø's specialty - the lobster which is served on a delicious romanesco salad:

Afterwards we get delicious beef cuts accompanied by hasselback potatoes and bearnaise. A true classic and super well cooked and delicious.

For dessert we get a really, really delicious brownie made on a 150 year old and secret recipe from England. The story of how Strandgaarden's chef got hold of the secret recipe is served at the table along with a delicious passion fruit sorbet and roasted coconut flakes.

All 5 dishes are served with a well thought out and well-chosen selection of wines.

Eventually we get coffee and some sweets before we return to our rooms.

One of the great pleasures of our stay is the beautiful weather which allowed us to enjoy a delicious breakfast in the idyllic courtyard:
