Rebild Bakker

Popular outdoor area with many activities

Rebild Bakker has a magnificent and beautiful landscape of hills and heath. Here you can experience new visual impressions all year round. This could be that in the spring everything blooms in fresh shades of green, in the late summer the moor is adorned with the purple flowers of the heather, in the autumn the landscape appears in beautiful red, brown and yellow tones, and in the winter months nature rests – either dark or covered in a layer of snow .

The area offers several scenic hiking routes, such as Rebild Bakker route, which takes you through many beautiful, fascinating and unique areas.

Landforms

Rebild Bakker is known for its breathtaking climbs, panoramic views, springs and flowing streams. When you reach the top of the hills, you experience a feeling of being lifted high above the surrounding landscape. However, these hills, in a geological sense, are actually false hills, formed by deep meltwater channels eroded into a moraine plateau.

The end of the ice age caused a shift in the chalk subsoil in the Lindenborg Ådal, which probably created a channel for meltwater, which resulted in the formation of a tunnel valley. The melting happened gradually, and you can observe terraces at different levels in the hills, which are traces of former ice-lake beds. The intricate, hilly landscape is moraine, shaped by meltwater, Arctic soil flow, sand drift and more. The Stone Age sea reached through the river valley to the area between Rold Storkro and Lars Kjær's house.

Panorama and flora

Sønderkol, which towers 102 meters above sea level, is one of the area's most sublime viewpoints. The effort to reach the top is rewarded with a unique panoramic view that stretches from Gryden, where the Rebildfest takes place, to Lindenborg Ådal, with its unique hill formations, hiking trails and grazing sheep, which contribute to the maintenance of nature.

The open landscape of the hills is home to a diversity of vegetation, from heather and bramble to wolf's foot and golden plum, and the thickets are home to beaver aspen, beech and scattered oaks. Without maintenance, the beaver aspen and beech would take over the landscape, so to preserve the open terrain, trees are removed from the most characteristic ravines and valleys, and grazing animals are used to tend dwarf bushes, heather and other plants.

The area's springs, Ravnkilde and Kovadsbækken, are fed by groundwater and house a unique insect life and rare flora, thanks to their stable temperature of around 7 degrees all year round. Access to the spring areas is restricted to protect the vulnerable ecosystem, and the beautiful orchids near the calcareous waters should be admired but not picked.

Rebildfesten

Since 1912, the Rebildfesten has been an annual tradition, established when Danish-Americans donated Rebild Bakker to the Danish state and established Denmark's first national park.

The festivities take place every 4th of July, the American Independence Day, when the hills become a center of celebration and gathering. Tourists, Danish-Americans, locals, prominent speakers, and occasionally royalty meet here to participate in the festivities and strengthen the ties between Denmark and the United States. The cauldron in the hills becomes filled with a unique atmosphere when thousands of people gather to celebrate the friendship between the two nations.
