Randbøl Hede

One of the country's largest inland heaths

Randbøl Hede is one of Denmark’s largest inland heaths. Follow the sandy paths through the heath and explore its flat landscape. You can also race to the top of the 17-meter-high sand dune Stoltenbjerg and enjoy the view from the top while you catch your breath.

Stoltenbjerg is one of the highest points of Staldbakkerne, a 1 km-long dune ridge formed by the western wind. The landscape is characterised by sand dunes and open, heather-covered expanses. There are views from here as far as the eye can see. Randbøl Hede is one of Denmark’s few preserved heath landscapes. It became a protected area in 1932 and was at that point Denmark’s largest area of protected landscape. The heather-clad expanses require continual intervention, so they do not become woodland.

There are various walking routes of different lengths in the area. You can also visit the nature centre Kristinelyst, which tells stories associated with the area and offers a range of family-friendly facilities.

Randbøl Hede and Syvårssøerne

If you follow the yellow marks that start at Randbøl Hede from the parking lot on Bøgvadvej, you will come on a breathtaking hike over Randbøl Hede, through Frederikshåb Plantage and a trip past Syvårssøerne.

The route is 4 km on sandy paths and it follows a hilly terrain. During World War II, this place was a hub for the Nazis, who used the area for runways, hangars and aviator shelters, which has left traces to this day. On the hike you can experience old German aviator hides and square graves for machine guns.

Likewise, on your hike you can experience the Seven Years 'Lakes, which have got their strange name from the lakes' mysterious disappearance from time to time. It is said that the lakes only appear every seven years. But the real explanation for why the lakes suddenly disappear and later reappear is that the lakes follow the changes groundwater level.
