Æbelø

Wonderful hiking route for the adventurous

The hike to Æbelø is for the more adventurous. On this 15 km long hike, you have to wade through the water to reach Æbelø. Therefore, it is also recommended that you go on this trip in the summer or first in the autumn, when the water temperature is still relatively high.

The 1.5 km long ebb road to Æbeløholm starts at the coast on Lindø, and from Æbeløholm a long narrow isthmus called Brådet leads on to Æbelø. You must be aware that Brådt can sometimes be flooded.

Æbelø offers fantastic plant and bird life. In the north-west corner of the island, for example, you will find a group of elm trees which were affected by elm disease in the 80s and therefore the trunks are now left alone and without bark. Along the coast you can experience beech trees, which are close to disappearing into the sea.

On the island you can see birds such as eiders, cormorants and terns, as most of these birds breed on the neighboring islets. Recently, the sea eagle has started to breed in the forest on Æbelø, so if you are lucky, you can also spot this impressive bird on your hike.

Sights and experiences

  • Æbelø lighthouse was built in 1884 from Bornholm granite. For many years, the lighthouse, together with the Strib lighthouse, played an absolutely decisive role in making it possible for ships to navigate through the Little Belt.
  • The beach meadow has a stand with the plant strand-kvan, which is characterized by having large spherical clusters of flowers.
  • You can still see the remains of Æbelø harbour, which was in use from the 1930s to the 1960s, when the primary transport was by boat.

Frequently asked questions

There are poles placed all the way through the water out to Æbeløholm, so you don't get lost.

  • It is best to move out to Æbelø when the tide is low, and the water therefore only reaches the ankles. Be careful not to set off in bad weather.

The island is privately owned, and for the sake of nature you must only move along the beach, as well as along marked paths and roads.
