Gisselfeld Kloster

History of the monastery

Gisselfeld Monastery was founded in 1547 by Peder Oxe and since then has played a central role in Denmark's history. Originally established as a monastery, the site was later transformed into a noble seat under the County of Gisselfeld. Over the centuries, the monastery has preserved its historic architecture and significance, which makes it a unique example of Danish Renaissance architecture. With its long and rich history, Gisselfeld has been the home of many prominent families and is today one of Denmark's best-preserved manor houses, still full of history and tradition.

Christmas square at Gisselfeld Monastery

Gisselfeld has Denmark's nicest Christmas square and is celebrating its 25th anniversary

The castle park is in a special class and, together with the Christmas square, magic is created at Gisselfeld Kloster on the weekends 15 – 17 and 22 – 24 November.

Come along to Denmark's coziest Christmas Square, which this year will be held for the 25th time.

This is the call from today's successors to Master of the Royal Court Peder Oxe, who in the years 1547-1575 built the castle and castle in the scenic surroundings of Haslev.

The whir of history is felt especially at Christmas time. It is Gisselfeld's biggest – and proudest – tradition. On the Christmas square, the scent of Christmas spreads from the many inspiring stands, which help to set the perfect setting.

From the beginning of the Christmas square, it was called "Denmark's nicest Christmas square" and the Christmas square and the setting have lived up to that throughout all 25 years.

Visit Santa's grotto
Juletorvet offers lots of fun and Christmas atmosphere. The focus is on good experiences for the children in particular. There are pony rides, music and entertainment, a tent with creative activities and not least Santa who welcomes children and childish souls down in the "Santa's Cave" under the Castle.

Christmas decorated castle
Persuaded, the apartment has been carefully decorated, with respect for the beautiful and natural setting in the park and around the castle. In recent years it has become a tradition for the castle to be decorated for Christmas inside, a beautiful tradition which has really given the Christmas square a new perspective. Entrance to the castle is included in the contract.

For the jubilee Christmas square, extra effort will be put into the decoration of the castle and in the park, so that it appears extra cozy and beautiful and with a little innovation.

The Gisselfeld Christmas Market is visited by almost 20,000 people every year, and it always takes place over two weekends in November. Thus, it is open 15.- 16.- 17. and 22.- 23.- 24. November. Friday in the time period at 15-20 and Saturdays and Sundays at 10-16.

Horror in the castle cellar at Gisselfeld during the autumn holidays

Gisselfeld Kloster again this year creates a very special eerie atmosphere during the autumn holidays, which is based on Gisselfeld's history.

For the past 2 years, Gisselfeld Kloster has offered an autumn holiday event that has rarely been seen before. Here, both park and castle were included in an eerie tale based on the real history of Gisselfeld.

The first year it was the story of Countess Dorthea Krag, who squandered the fortune on clothes and other expensive things, and last year it was about the Fisherman flooding the cellar under the castle. This year they follow up with a new story, namely about "The Alchemist who jumped into the air". A tragic story about how things can go wrong when you experiment with chemistry and other dangerous things.

During the autumn holidays, you can see and hear much more about this scientist's dangerous experiments. In the old days it was normal for an estate to have their own alchemist and therefore it was natural for Gisselfeld to also have one - but think how lucky it is that the castle is still standing after how bad things went in the cellar.

In addition to this, there will also be a treasure hunt for all children and childlike souls in the Castle Park, pumpkin carving and other surprises in the style of the past several years. It is Stig and Greg from Orangeriet Paradehuset who devised the treasure hunt and are responsible for the other pleasant activities in the park.

The parade house at Gisselfeld

The parade house at Gisselfeld

The parade house at Gisselfeld is a wonderful oasis of exotic plants and flowers, located in the historic castle park. The beautiful mid-1800s Victorian greenhouse was originally built to house rare plants and has since become part of Gisselfeld's botanical heritage. Today, Paradehuset functions as a peaceful and inspiring garden where visitors can enjoy a colorful selection of plants, tropical growths and beautiful flowers all year round.
