Karlstrup Kalkgrav

Explore the scenic area and get very close to Danish history. Maybe you're even lucky enough to find a fossil?
Beautiful nature experiences
The limestone tomb was formed in the Cretaceous, millions of years ago, and is an area of approx. 30 acres. In the middle lies a large, beautiful lake with the clearest azure water.
The lake is very inviting, and especially on hot summer days it can be tempting to cool off with a dip in the beautiful lake. Note, however, that in some places the lake can be up to 14 meters deep, which can mean large temperature fluctuations and that bathing is at your own risk!
The area at Karlstrup Kalkrav is also a nice place to go hiking. Among other things, you can experience rich plant and animal life, including lead chickens, scuba divers, tower falcon and snoge. There are two different paths around the lime pit & #8211; a wide path along the lake and a smaller path along the top of the lime pit.

Info
The history
Behind Karlstrup Kalkgrav is that it was Chamberlain Carlsen from Gl. Køgegård, which started mining lime in 1843 and in 1879 the grave was sold to A / S Karlstrup Lime Works.
Fossil
You can take fossil hunting in the west zone of the Lime Tomb. Did you know that fossils are ancient bones from ancient animals that have been petrified? Obnoxious!
Calcium
The limestone in Karlstrup Limestone is up to 2000 years and was made in the Cretaceous period 65 million years ago. At that time, large parts of Denmark were covered by seas where many different animals and plants lived. When they died they sank to the bottom and it is they who have become lime.
meteor
The theory of the meteor strike that killed the dinosaurs was, for many years, doubtful, had taken place, but one of the evidence lies in Karlstrup Kalkgrav as a few centimeters thin layer of fish. The fishery is exciting because it is very rare on the ground, but quite normal in space.
natural Pearl
Until 1975 there was busy activity with excavators and trucks in the tomb. Today it is a natural pearl owned by the Danish Nature Agency. That is, one must not destroy the 30 hectare lime pit because it is protected.
ATTENTION:
It is not suggested to bathe in the beautiful water because it is deep and the water is sometimes very cold.
ATTENTION:
Please collect some garbage and save the world.
