History of the monastery

dsc_0019-2

Børglum Monastery is not just beautiful buildings and old wallsIt is a center of power with a history spanning over 1,000 years – and still arouses wonder among historians.

It all began around the year 800-1100, when the place served as a royal estate for King Sweyn Estridsen himself. But soon history took a turn: When the episcopal see came to Vendsyssel in 1060, the grounds at the royal estate became the center of ecclesiastical power – and thus home to Denmark's oldest monastery.

But it doesn't stop here.
Børglum quickly became the headquarters of the influential Premonstratensian order – and gained importance in both Denmark, Norway and Sweden.

After the Reformation in 1536, the monastery was first taken over by the crown, then made into a manor house, and in 1835 the Rottbøll family took over – a family that still runs the monastery today.

But one mystery remains unsolved:
How could a medieval center of power like Børglum never become a real city with citizens, merchants and markets – like all other bishoprics?

Historians are still trying to find that answer – maybe you'll get a clue yourself when you visit the monastery?
